Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Spectrometer
TJA IRIS Advantage/1000

The ICP is for elemental analyses in water and solution systems.  We have a TJA IRIS Advantage/1000 Radial ICAP Spectrometer as shown at left.  It has a Solid State CID Detector, which can simultaneously analyze a sample for multiple elements.  It is a time and cost efficient system for elemental analysis.

Schedule

elemental analyzer - 10K .jpg

Elemental Analyzer
Carlo Erba NA1500

The Carlo Erba NA1500 elemental analyzer simultaneously determines the total carbon and nitrogen in a wide range of organic and organometallic chemicals. Most commonly in the EM-1 lab it is employed for the analysis of soils and plant tissue samples.

Schedule

Discrete Analyzer
WestCo SmartChem 200

The WestCo SmartChem 200 discrete analyzer is an automated spectrophotometer that almost completely replaces the Alpkem Flow Solution IV within the facility.  The Alpkem will only be used occasionally for long nitrate runs, or as a backup to the discrete analyzer.  The SmartChem 200 is capable of a number of different measurements, but its primary function will be to measure various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in solution.

Schedule

Gas Chromatograph
Shimadzu GC-14A

The Shimadzu GC-14A gas chromatograph is equipped with FID (with methanizer) and ECD (Ni63) detectors and is set up for analysis of N2O, CH4 and CO2.  The instrument is designed for analysis of CH4, CO2, and N2O in concentrations close to atmospheric concentrations, although with suitable standards much higher concentrations of these gases can be analyzed.  The Shimadzu EZChrome data collection system is run on a Dell Optiplex Gxi 233Mhz computer.

Schedule

Total Organic Carbon Analyzer
Shimadzu TOC-5000A

The Shimadzu TOC-5000A with autosampler is capable of four different measurements on filtered samples in solution: Total Carbon (TC), Inorganic Carbon (IC), Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon (NPOC).  The instrument is PC controlled by a computer.

Schedule

 Ion Chromatograph
Dionex DX-500

This instrument is for determination of polar and ionic species in water and solution systems.  The Dionex DX-500 Ion Chromatograph in the center has a conductivity detector and is capable of using electrochemical and UV detectors.

Schedule

Freeze Dryer
Labconco FreeZone 4.5

The FreeZone 4.5L Benchtop Freeze Dry System is a compact laboratory lyophilizer with ice holding capacity for light to moderate sample loads. It has a permanently-installed 10-port drying chamber and a compact benchtop design. This instrument removes water from frozen materials by converting frozen water directly into its vapor without the intermediate formation of liquid water.

Schedule

Mercury Analyzer
Tekran® Series 2600

The Tekran® Series 2600 system allows the analysis of ultra-trace levels of total mercury in liquid samples. It offers unparalleled sensitivity and flexibility for those who require truly sensitive total mercury analysis.

Schedule

Continuous Flow Autoanalyzer
Alpkem Flow Solution IV

The Alpkem Flow Solution IV with autosampler is equipped with nitrate/nitrite, ammonia/TKN, and orthophosphate cartridges allowing for a variety of measurements of different forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in solution.  The WinFlow 4.01 data collection software is run on a HP Vectra VL7 computer.

Schedule

CEM MarsXpress Microwave Digester

To transform solid samples into liquids for elemental analyses on other instruments. This instrument is housed in the basement of Green Earth Sciences.

Schedule

No-Fee Instruments:

  1. Spectrophotometer (Hitachi U-2000): This is a bench top UV/VIS spectrophotometer equipped with a sample sipper, which operates over a range of 200nm to 1000nm. The Plymovent snorkel exhaust above the Alpkem autoanalyzer can be extended and positioned over the spectrophotometer when acetone or other solvents are in use.

  2. Acid Block Digester (SI Scientific AIM 500): To transform solid samples into liquids for elemental analyses on other instruments.

  3. Water Purification System (Barnstead Epure 4 Module): To produce high quality and purity analytical grade water for chemical analyses.

  4. Balance (Mettler Toledo PR503): Analytical grade.

  5. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer: For elemental analyses of liquid samples. It can usually handle one element at a time.  This instrument is housed in Herrin, Room 488.

If you are planning to use any of the instruments in the center, please review our general information page first. View the schedule to make sure the time you want is not booked yet, then click on the date on the calendar to sign up.
